f*** the police (and the bn too)

I haven’t been blogging much mainly because there has been nothing much to make me ANGRY enough to do so.

However …

Yesterday I received a circular from the “Residents Association Section 5, Petaling Jaya” (Reg. No. 417) from the “new President…” Johan Tung bin Abdullah, addressed to “All residents of Section 5″

The letter informed us that due to the rise in the neighbourhood crime rate, they have now engaged a private security firm to undertake a “Neighbourhood Watch Programme” which entails 24-hour patrols c/w 2 guards on 12-hr shifts, charging RM6,000 per month which each household has been asked to pay RM365.00 a year for.

While this is a highly laudable initiative, the following questions must be asked:

1) Crime prevention is by and large, the job of THE POLICE – why have they allowed the situation in Sec. 5 to deteriorate so much that we have to hire a private company to do their job?

2) Won’t privatising neighbourhood security lead to more complacency, tardiness and laziness by the Police?

3) We already pay taxes which go toward paying the very policemen who are supposed to keep our neighbourhoods safe, now we have to pay extra because they’re not doing their job?

4) The privatisation of homeland security can become a multi-bilion ringgit industry if we condone the practise. The people that manage the Sec. 5 private police are charging RM6,000 per month.
Whose interests are we actually protecting here?

5) Where do the Police force’s priorities lie?

According to the same circular, “on the morning of June 2nd 2009, 4 criminals slashed 2 workers in an armed robbery” in my neighbourhood. It doesn’t say what action the police took. What do you think they did?

Ask anyone who’s been mugged or burgled or whatever, what action the cops took after that.

Last Friday however, about 100 of the very same police showed up quite promptly at a MBPJ [read Pakatan Rakyat] function (in Taman Jaya near Sec. 5) celebrating the birthday of Aung San Suu-Kyi, broke it up and arrested 16 Myanmar refugees.

They can show up like Superman for this but we have to hire people to protect our neighbourhood?

Report that your house has been broken into and they don’t seem to give a shit. Light a candle and assemble peacefully under the Opposition’s banner  and they’ll be all over the place and all over you giving you shit.

Why? Have they been told by their masters – the BN, to punish the residents of PJ for voting Pakatan?

And when they do catch people for allegedly committing an actual crime, do they let the natural course of justice deem the person’s guilt?

Of course not, they torture you to death.

If a person in their custody is ill, will they excercise their duty of care and send him for medical attention?

Of course not, they just leave him to die, like they did with the latest death in custody, A. Gnanapiragasam.

Do they go after the ‘big fish’?

Of course not, but they’ll always be around to slap you with a nice summons for illegal parking or round up a few small boys or a migrant worker and see that the crap is beaten out of them as the videos below show:

Meanwhile in the NST [21/6] Keris pops up on the front page saying:

There will be a revisit of the 125 recommendations in 2005 put out by the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysian Police, which were meant to create a world-class police service in the country.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said in line with aims to enhance the image and operations of the force … he will be retracing steps to see if the recommendations had been carried out and if they had made an impact.

Four years ago, the commission’s report looked into three main areas of reform for the force — crime reduction, the eradication of corruption and observing human rights.Among its key recommendations were the setting up of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission, which never saw the light of day…

Without going into detail as to which recommendations he wants to address, he said he was aware that the people still had negative perceptions when it came to the force …

He said in his recent discus sions with police officers, grievances were still rife and that the ministry had much to do to improve their welfare and alleviate constraints.

THEIR grievances, THEIR welfare, THEIR constraints.

Little wonder then we have to pay for a private police force and get arrested for lighting a candle.

Well, Keris, even if you manage to shake them up good and proper despite taking their welfare, constraints and grievances into account, I can tell you this:

In two years time - come General Elections 13 – your entire BN machinery along with the people that manage your Police Force WILL BE WIPED OUT. Same goes for the people who manage your Attorney General’s Chambers, your Judiciary and your Press.

So you and your gang had better stop us before we stop you … go ahead Mr. Homeland Security Minister, make our day. Sick your cops on us and tell them to beat us to death. That’s the only way you’ll stop us, and believe me dear sir, there are MANY, MANY of us just itching to put an X in the right place at the next elections.

So go ahead if you can, catch us all and kill us all.

In the meantime, fuck the police and fuck you too.

sodomy sandiwara chapter 3

*** WATCH SHORT DOCUMENTARY: IN REMEMBRANCE OF SEPT 1998 ***

UPDATE 10.45 MALAYSIAKINI:

Sessions judge SM Komathy Suppiah set Oct 7 for her decision [after hearing] arguments this morning from both the prosecution and the defence counsel on whether the case should be transferred to the High Court.

[Note: Parliament reconvenes on the 13th]

According to Malaysiakini, the trial started today with the prosecution, led by AG’s Chambers prosecution head Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden, submitting in favour of a transfer of the case to High Court.

However, the defence team objected to the transfer notice as it was signed by attorney-general (AG) Abdul Gani Patail.

Their objection was on the basis that the AG should not have played any role in this case as he was being investigated following a complaint that the had tampered with evidence in Anwar’s cases 10 years ago.

Mohd Yusof said that Abdul Gani had no direct role in prosecution of this case and as such the transfer order, although signed by the attorney general, was valid. [In other words, he closed his eyes when he signed the order? "Don't tell me what this is! I'm not involved!! I don wanna knowwww!" scribbblescribblesign...]

Responding to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s previous assurance that Abdul Gani will not be involved in any way in the Anwar trial, Mohd Yusof said: “At the end of the day, the PM can say anything.” [cos he's an idiot?]

Citing case laws, Mohd Yusof told the judge that she had no choice but to transfer the case to the High Court. [Case laws? We're not talking 'binding precedent' here - this is merely in the realm of procedure - and procedurally, a Sessions court is a more than adequate forum to hear a sodomy charge. Besides, to drag in any case down to the level of a trumped up sodomy charge is an insult, ok?]

10.00AM: Anwar is in court again today – this time the Attorney General’s prosecutors [persecutors?] want the case transferred to the High Court [where many a 'friendly' judge presides?].

Video of Anwar and his lawyers disputing the AG’s application [taken just after the last hearing on Sept 10].

Sodomy sandiwara chapter 2 [10 Sept]:
http://deadalienx.wordpress.com/2008/09/10/sept-10-anwars-next-hurdle/

A minute-by-minute account of today’s proceedings is available on Anwar’s blog.

Meanwhile he held a press conference outside the courtroom and Malaysiakini quizzed him on the delay in the master plan to topple the govt:

“I appeal to Malaysian citizens, particularly those who want to see a change, to understand … and be a bit more patient because we do not want to transgress the constitution, rules and procedures,” he said.

He also said he had written to the king to inform him of his actions so far, although he was not yet seeking an audience with the monarch, [why ah? why not? whywhywhy???] who would need to approve any change in government.

See analysis “Race to the Istana” on why the King is imperative in the master plan.

Video of Anwar’s press conference at the courthouse:

He’s got to get a move on before the momentum loses steam, and fizzles out, along with the support of the people, 31+ MPs included.

Precious time is slipping away
But you’re only king for a day
It doesn’t matter to which God you pray
Precious time is slipping away
It doesn’t matter what route you take
Sooner or later the hearts going to break
No rhyme or reason, no master plan
No Nirvana, no promised land

sept 16 – declare your own holiday! (updated)

Instead of taking to the streets in protest against BN’s arrogant and criminal behaviour, why don’t we all STAY HOME in protest!

There are calls for everyone to stay away from work/school/business on TUESDAY 16 SEPT 2008 – HARI MALAYSIA (which should be a public holiday, anyway).

Taking to the streets in protest will not get as much attention as deserted streets, a plunge in productivity and a stock market dip!

What more peaceful a protest than to spend the say at home with the ones we love! *sigh*

Let’s do it!! As soon as you get to work Monday morning put in your application for a day’s leave. You won’t be breaking any laws if you apply for leave – if you take MC, it’ll only be dishonest but not illegal.

To help you make your mind up, here’s a classic for you:
MC Miker G n’ DJ Sven with HOLIDAY RAP!

“They’ve Gone Berserk” Update [13/8]:

Sin Chew journalist released. In the NST, Syed Hamid Alblur said she was detained under the Internal Security Act because police believed her life was “under threat”.

He declared, while struggling madly to keep a straight face, police intelligence had ascertained that Tan’s safety was threatened because she had reported on Bukit Bendera Umno division chairman Datuk Ahmad Ismail’s racist and seditious comments, making this the only country where the victim is jailed and the criminal remains free.

According to Malaysiakini, Anwar Ibrahim is seeking a meeting with Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to discuss national security in the wake of the ISA crackdown and the future of Malaysian politics.

Perhaps Badawi is NOT the right person to talk to. The BN now has two heads [not unlike the proverbial snake] – one head – let’s call it “the Badawi head” - has Badawi’s ever-decreasing supporters, while the other head, let’s call it “the Mahathir head”, has Najib and his ever-increasing gang, with Mahathir as their spiritual leader [the term 'spiritual' is used VERY VERY loosely here].

The Mahathir head wants a return of the old order, where we, the ordinary citizens, were ‘provided’ for by a benevolent dictator; where government did ‘business’ with impunity (remember “Malaysia Inc.”) and in the course of “business as usual”, were free to pillage the coffers in pursuit of personal wealth for themselves and extended families, where its ’public opinion’, ‘popularity’ and standing amongst right thinking members of society did not matter – the only thing that mattered was power and control, held by any means neccessary.

The Mahathir head will NEVER want any Badawi-style reforms if it means forsaking ‘business’ and will NEVER want to lose power and the ‘business’ it brings and will crush anyone who stands in their way.

Therefore although wanting to talk to Badawi is a useless move because the Mahathir head is already now calling most of the shots, the Mahathir head will never want to talk to Anwar, anyway - what they want is to silence him and his people forever.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Sept 12 will truly be the saddest day of the year – the BN govt in its desperate attempt to cling on to its last vestiges of power, has used the Internal Security Act (ISA) to silence the reformasi movement.

Political activist-blogger Raja Petra, Member of Parliament Teresa Kok and Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng have been arrested for “being a threat to national security” [read: a threat to Barisan National security]. (Click on links for ‘reasons’ for their arrests.)

The ISA, as is infamously known, provides for detention without trial for up to two years and is renewable indefinitely on the prerogative of the Home Minister [Syed Hamid Albar].

Three newspapers – the Sun, Sin Chew and Suara Keadilan have also been issues ’show cause’ letters – a precursor to suspension of their publishing permit.

There are fears of a massive ISA crackdown, last seen in 1987 during the Mahathir regime.

Fifty years from now, if BN are still in power, our school history books will show that the persons caught today were enemies of the people out to destroy our country – and the kids of the time will say, “Ooo … these were really bad people weren’t they … lucky we have such a vigilant government.”

The BN have gone berserk. The only “threat to national security” and enemy of the people are the BN govt themselves.

As such, the ISA along with the BN govt has to be abolished immediately.

SEPTEMBER THE SIXTEENTH – Overthrow Govt Day – Yes? No? Maybe?

Malaysiakini speculates that Anwar is “poaching whole parties, not just MPs”, which would be good for an MP who may have a few ’skeletons in his closet’ – better to migrate across the Rubicon en masse, toeing the party line on party orders, instead of all alone  where it’s easy for the ’snipers’ to single him out and shoot him down.

According to Malaysiakini’s analysis:

The Sabah parties which may pull out from Barisan are likely to be Kadazandusun and Chinese-based parties.

A similar scenario appears unfolding in Sarawak involving Iban and Dayak-based parties – Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) … [with the Special Branch apparently snapping at their heels - click here for report]

This is the breakdown of Parliamentary seats in East Malaysia:

Leaving out UMNO and DAP, there are a total of 41 seats – more than enough to form a new govt if they cross over.

But according to Malaysia Today, Anwar MAY NOT WANT these 41 seats – why?

RPK’s latest analysis in Malaysia Today, hits the nail on the head -
[welcome excerpts from his trademark long-winded style]:

Pakatan Rakyat has 43 Malay Members of Parliament opposed to 39 non-Malays. That is okay because then Umno can’t say that the non-Malays control the opposition. But if 30 non-Malay Members of Parliament cross over to Pakatan Rakyat, and they get to form the new federal government, then it would be 69 non-Malays opposed to only 43 Malays.

Herein lies the problem and that is why there is a delay in Pakatan Rakyat forming the new federal government. Anwar Ibrahim does have his 30. In fact, it is more than 30. But Anwar has to be very careful in maintaining the ‘balance’.

He can’t afford to form the new federal government with 69 or more non-Malay Members of Parliament and only 43 Malays. Umno would go to town with this and it will ‘prove’ what Umno has been saying these last many months: that the non-Malays have grabbed political power and the Malays have lost political power.

He needs at least 15 to 20 Umno Members of Parliament to join another 15 to 20 non-Malay Members of Parliament to cross over so that he can form the new federal government with the right racial balance. Then Umno can’t say that the Malays have lost political power. And Umno also can’t use this to fan the sentiments of the Malays and trigger another race riot the likes of what happened on 13 May 1969.

This is not just about kicking Barisan Nasional out. This is not just about forming a new Pakatan Rakyat federal government. This is also about maintaining the peace, stability and harmony between the many races and about denying Umno the opportunity to turn this whole thing into a race issue.

If this were true, I can already hear the critics hectoring away: “Isn’t Anwar also playing the politics of racial quotas? Isn’t this no better than what the BN has been playing all this while? Is Pakatan no better than BN?”

[Btw, Charles Hector has laid out the Constitutional provisions for a change in leadership in his blog.]

There has been talk that there are indeed UMNO members who are ready to jump ship, led by an apparently disgruntled Umno vice-president and international trade and industry minister Muhyiddin Yassin, but according to Malaysiakini, Anwar brushed it aside and described it as mere rumour. Yassin has been said to have been ‘marginalised’ in the party after being vocal about the party’s leadership.

Bookies are known to currently be taking bets on Sept 16 - the odds stand at 10-to-1.
Wahlauneeyama … I put ten bark I can ween wa-ha-nerd leyyyy…

Can Anwar ’strike the right balance’? Will a chunk of UMNO fall into Pakatan’s lap? Will all this be accomplished by TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 16? Whatever’s the outcome, it’s one helluva gamble that Anwar’s about to take.

Place yer bets, place yerrr bets evryboddy!

But before that, it would be good, for those about to cross, about to entice and about to gamble with this country’s future, to heed this advice:

a little civil disobedience is good

aka Malaysian Rule of Law.

I was wondering what ‘alternative Merdeka message’ I could write, and I got to thinking about the concept of the ‘Rule of Law’ viz Malaysia.

The concept was first postulated by one British Legal boffin A.V. Dicey, and is something which every Intermediate Law student should know by heart:

A.V. Dicey’s theory on the Rule of Law

Primarily…No man could be punished except for breaches of law. In other words, all government actions must be authorised by law.

But what laws do we have? Bad laws: Internal Security Act, Sedition Act, s.377 [Sodomy], S.27 Police Act [no public assemblies without police approval], Official Secrets Act, University and University Colleges Act, Printing Presses and Publications Act, new upcoming DNA Act … the list goes on.

The Criminal Procedure Code does not adequately protect you if you are ever called in ’to assist in investigations’ – as such the police can freely treat you like a common criminal - your name smeared in the press, denied police bail, subject to violent interrogation – even before you’re charged.

What ‘rule of law’ is this?

Secondarily…No man is above the law and everyone, regardless of rank, is subject to the ordinary laws of the land.

But in Malaysia, good people who expose the truth are hunted down, hauled up and charged, while the evil are allowed not only to roam free and carry on but left to remain in positions of absolute power.

What ‘rule of law’ is this?

Finally…The courts are the final protectors of citizen’s rights – judicial decisions determine the rights of the private person.

KORRECK KORRECK KORRECK! - As long as the evil ones remain in position of absolute power, expect the plans to set up an independent Judicial Appointments Commission to go the way of the IPCMC [Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission]

Rule of Law? Where?

The other day I parked at the usual spot in from of my neighbourhood supermarket. It is not a designated parking area but nevertheless, set away from blocking the traffic flow. Brickfields at any time of the day is a full-on parking nightmare – too many cars, too few parking spots. Cars are double parked and placed in any available nook along the roads.

Needless to say, upon my return, a ticket was flapping happily in the breeze under my windsceen wiper. Last year I received the same ticket, of which I was required to pay a RM15 compound. Today the compound has been upped to RM100.

I decided not to pay – if there are no legitimate parking spaces, how do you expect me to park legitimately?

The ticket is tucked away under my sun visor along with the six other outstanding summonses for speedtrap offences over the years - 0.1km/h above 120km/h on the highway will get you one. [On your handphone, type "POLIS SAMAN <your car number> SEMUA" and sms to 32728, and see how many you have.]

Last night I was caught in a two hour crawl driving from SS5 PJ to KL. More of the same as I hit the Federal Highway. I usually try and maneuvre between lanes to try and follow the fastest flowing one, but this time, I said to hell with all that and zipped along on the emergency lane from the Jalan 222 junction all the way past Kuen Cheng school.

All the while, I was thinking, if a cop flags me down, I’m going to say ‘if you can’t do anything to ease traggic congestion, if DBKL can’t widen this old highway, hell, I’ll ‘widen’ it myself. If you have no other work but to chase down traffic violators while the big criminals run riot, go ahead encik - saaaaamanlaaa!’

I’ll tear up the saman and use it as toilet paper.

Take me to court? Takelaa. How much can they fine me? And if I refuse to pay, how long can they jail me for a traffic offence?

I saw a few hundred Malaysian flags fluttering from lamposts along the highway last night – I could have stopped by and cut one down, taken it home and hung it on my balcony. I’m not stealing, I’m merely displaying the flag somewhere else. Hanging the flag is how they gauge ‘patriotism’ right? You don’t like it? Catch me, smear my name in the papers and charge me in court, while the evil ones continue free and undisturbed.

Malaysia’s ‘rule of law’ - bad guys roam free and abuse their positions but you and I get samanned for minor infringements.

In times like these, some civil disobedience is good.

With this in mind, I was thinking of an ‘alternative’ Merdeka song to play as I usher in the Merdeka, and I chose this one, dedicated to our men in blue who have nothing else better to do…

True to form, I just now spotted them manning their usual roadblock along the road past the old railway station leading to Central Market, stopping bikes and cars to presumably halt any dissidents joining in the Merdeka festivities tonight – we simply can’t have these ingrates joining in, can we?

Rule of Law, it seems.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY [from Malaysiakini & Suara KeADILan]

DSAW n DSAI roll into their polling station

DSAW n' DSAI roll into their polling station

  • 5.11pm: Malaysiakini reports: PKR top leaders are confident that Anwar would win the seat as their exit polls show that he is leading by 18,000 votes; while Arif Shah claims he’s confident of an upset – he and his BN buddies will probably be feeling very upset later this evening.
  • 4.35pm: Badawi is noticed leaving Permatang Pauh – a sign that he’s either a) sleepy b) bored or c) already upset
  •  4pm: Malaysiakini reports: “From our exit poll figures and what we are tracking, Anwar is safely leading in the polls and… I think that it is right to say about 61 percent,” said Sivarasa Rasiah, PKR vice-president.
  • 3pm: Firstly three, then five busloads of suspected phantom voters halted by PKR MP N. ”Ghostbuster” Gobalakrishnan. The buses, one registered with UMNO Melaka, were then herded into a nearby police station. According to Malaysiakini, Gobala tries to make police report but police are “too busy” to attend to them.

Video of ‘phantom menace’:

  • Update: Then, in a dramatic turn of events, when Gobalakrishnan went back into the police station, the MP and his two sons were arrested for “stopping the buses”.

His sons – Arvind, 20, and Pravin, 23 – were also allegedly roughed up by the police prior to their arrest.

The FRU also dispersed the waiting PKR crowd outside police station.

  • 1.30pm: Acording to Suara KeADILan, C4, Kerbau and Kerishamuddin booed as they visit polling stations.
  • 11.00am onwards: Massive gridlock and jam on all roads in and leading into Permatang Pauh – out of town voters worry they’ll not make it in time. Police roadblocks provide great service to this cause.
  • 9am: Anwar casts vote – video of short speech thereafter:

Update 21/8/08 8.55pm:

You must have seen the front pages of ALL mainstream newspapers today:

Two Perak PKR state executive councillors and a former PKR state assemblyperson were among six people detained in an Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) operation.

According to the ACA, the five who were nabbed in a sting operation yesterday were caught red-handed with RM100,000 found in a bag belonging to the exco at a hotel in Ipoh.

Here’s the inside scoop:

According to my usually reliable source’s VERY reliable source inside PKR, the guys were having coffee, a total stranger walks up smiling to their table, shakes their hands, makes small talk then leaves, but not before leaving a small bag under the table [literally, under-the-table money].

Badda-bing-badda-boom, the ACA swoops in, dives for the bag and finds RM100,000 cash in it and promptly arrests them.

According to PKR Deputy President Syed Husin Ali, in a statement on PKR’s website:

The manner in which the arrest has taken place indicates the possibility that the individuals involved may have been victims of entrapment.  The timing of this incident also gives reason to suspect a political motive given our close proximity to the by-election in Permatang Pauh.

Dirty deeds done dirt cheap

Update 20/8/08:

“Najiiiiibbb … remember Port DICKSON?”

In an “I know what you did last summer”-type scenario, Anwar Ibrahim is threatening to expose a ‘dark secret’ of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s, involving the southern beach town of Port Dickson.

“I will expose Port Dickson … Najib will run if I were to narrate its tales,” Anwar said in a Malaysiakini report, to which a 3,000-odd strong crowd at Bkt. Mertajam mini stadium rose to its feet shouting “bongkar sekarang!!” [expose now!!] but Anwar held off, declining to give further details.

I have been inundated with sms’s [ok-lah, ONE sms from someone under the delusion that I'm Anwar's personal adviser and PKR supremo] asking me if I know what Najib and Port Dickson have to hide, to which I replied: It’s either one of the following:

1) The port town was named after Najib’s nickname.

2) In order to hide that “Dickson” is his nickname, he tried to get PD’s name changed to the direct Bahasa Malaysia translation, but failed.

3) There are photos of Najib on the beach, shirtless, revealing that he has C-cup sized breasts and thus he fears that with these photos exposed, he’ll be given a nickname worse than “Dickson”.

Meanwhile, former husband of Michelle Yeoh, Dickson Poon [aka Poon Dik Sang] wonders what all the fuss is about …

16/8/2008

I was there!

50,000 other KeADILan/Pakatan people were there too, on a big school field with around 1,000 or so FRU men separating us by a wide gulf from 1,000+ BN ’supporters’ [who were possibly paid].

Among the highlights were:

 - seeing people regardless of ethnicity, actually dancing madly to kavadi drummers and and grooving wildly to a lion dance troupe!

- watching Puteri UMNO and BN boys getting lambasted by the crowd!

- being physically swept along by the wave of supporters as Anwar rolled in through the sea of people!

- being able to share this all with you ’cos I recorded it on video! (see below).

The scary part was when an Election commission lackey announced that nomination papers had been submitted, and OBJECTIONS were called from both parties and the ‘independent’ PAS man [planted to further spoil Arif's chances - PR apparently turned the tables on BN by using BN's time-honoured tactic this time].

Objection forms were handed out – BN lackeys took 3 and PKR took one.

The ONLY probable way the BN could get Anwar disqualified was to object citing a condition in the Elections Act: a person who had previously been jailed must have been freed AT LEAST five years before he can contest.

Anwar has been free for four years.

Although it can be agrued that Anwar spent a wasted extra two years on a conviction which was subsequently overturned [therefore eligible to contest], if the EC accepted these grounds, he would have to take the matter to court [and we know how long that would take...]

Further, if the EC, for any reason disqualified the man – PANDEMONIUM AND CHAOS WOULD ENSUE – 50,000 hot, hungry and angry supporters would have pulverised that EC lackey along with the 1,000-odd BN lackeys and the FRU, who by the way had HAND GRENADES tucked in their vest pockets, would have had a grand time pulverising everyone there.

Anyway, the EC threw all objections out, our man is in and the game is on…

Thurs Aug 7: Anwar charged in court. Take a bet his trial will proceed instantaneously.
Check out some havoc speculations from TULANG BESI.

Sat Aug 16: Nomination day for Permatang Pauh by-election.

Aug 16 to Aug 25: Campaigning period. It’s the school holidays, so why not plan a trip to PP with the kids and all, just for the fun of it? You can stay in Penang – very close by.

Mon Aug 18: The day Anwar was supposed to return to Police HQ for further questioning.

Tue Aug 26: Permatang Pauh by-election [Tuesday???].

In Malaysiakini, PKR information chief Tian Chua has condemned the Election Commission’s decision to hold the Permatang Pauh by-election on a Tuesday, instead of on the weekend which is usual practice.

“I think the reason they are having it on a weekday is to reduce the turnout,” he said.

“This is a deliberate action to inconvenience the voters. We condemn the Election Commission for their decision.

Permatang Pauh voting stats: 57,969 registered voters; 490 postal voters [barring any sudden shifting of an army barracks with a few tens of thousand postal voters].

According to Malaysiakini: It is unclear whether Anwar will be denied bail. If bail was denied, as was the case when he was charged 10 years ago, Anwar will be detained and will have to fight the by-election behind bars.

Video of Anwar’s press conference today

Up till now, BN are still looking for a candidate with enough credibility to at least put up a fight.

They are at present trying to ask Barack Obama to join BN.

“an epic battle of three men”

Nathaniel Tan and Salehuddin Hashim of KeADILan have together written an excellent analysis on the current “situation”. Published in Malaysiakini and also Nat’s blog.

An epic battle of three men - digging out the true motives of Anwar’s arrest

Excerpts:

The civil servant class of power brokers [read: police] almost don’t care who is in power; they just want a strong boss who can secure the current regime, and ensure that ‘business’ can be run as usual.

There’s simply too much at stake – and we are talking entire lives and careers forever besmirched and some serious prison time here – for business not to run as usual, or for any type of new order based on integrity, transparency and justice to take over.

Also in the same boat are certain former prime politicians still alive and kicking in the country, actively egging on a return to the old order.

Unfortunately for these agitators, they are still oblivious to what was written on the wall last March 8th. The good news is that the the voices of those seeking a better Malaysia for all, have matured and wisened up to these manipulations as well as learnt the value of holding fast to Gandhian principles in their struggle.

The [reformasi] movement has also reached out and expanded beyond its original circles to all right-thinking Malaysians, who will no longer stand and watch all that is decent and honourable stolen from beneath their noses.

I think schemers and plotters will find a stronger, more united Malaysia willing to resist peacefully to the very end.

‘no conf mon 2′ – police without a cause [updated 14/7]

UPDATES 14/7

According to Warta 1 RTM: 300 policemen were blocking the access road  to Parlament  … with NO ONE ELSE AROUND! No protestors, rally-ers, dissidents or persons posing a [barisan] national security threat.

And the above figure is not including the many other cops stationed at roadblocks throughout the city, causing major jams. (1,600 cops, according to NST)

What a bloody waste of: time, resources and energy [including the petrol wasted while idling in a police road-blocked jam].

It would be interesting to find out the number of crimes that went un-prevented in KL this morning, while the police were busy making a public nuisance of themselves.

According to Tian Chua’s blog:
“Speaker Rejects No-Confidence Motion … based on the ground of technically” (sic)

Meanwhile, according to Malaysiakini, Anwar defies order to present himself at the police HQ for questioning over the sodomy allegations.

Also: Don’t miss tomorrow’s “GREAT PETROL DEBATE” on TV9 [and not TV3 as advertised] and Astro Bernama TV (Astro 502) and Astro Awani (Astro 501) at 9pm [15/7/08].

… more to come….

[13/7]

The cops are out creating traffic jams yet again – I just got back to KL from PJ through the Federal Highway – traffic backed-up for miles due to the roadblock at Kota Darul Ehsan.

Check the live video stream from ITIS

According to Malaysiakini:
Police have put up road blocks in the capital as they brace for protests ahead of a possible debate of no confidence in Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi tomorrow.

Police said several roads leading to the parliament building would be sealed off tomorrow and urged people not to protest, although the Keadilan opposition party denied Sunday it had called for any demonstrations.

… opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was today banned from going anywhere close to parliament.

Anwar has earlier expressed the intention to go to Parliament to hear the no-confidence debate.

“Police came to Anwar’s home today and presented the court order restricting him from going near parliament on Monday. If Anwar breaches the order, he could be arrested and charged in court.”

The court order will allow the police to arrest on sight if Anwar and opposition supporters are spotted within five kilometres of Parliament.

gasp, gulp and gurgle!

Breaking news from Malaysiakini:
[Excerpts]
The opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition moved an urgent motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Should the motion be accepted, it is likely to be debated on Monday when Parliament resumes after the weekend break. The House does not sit on Friday.

However, the motion may not see the light of day as the House speaker has the power to reject it on the ground that it is not urgent.

Moveover, only a one-hour debate will be set aside for such motions and no vote would be taken.

No vote? Then what for la? Saja make noise for one hour only?

The opposition may have the option to file a motion under Standing Order 27, which requires notice of 14 days to be given.

Aha … first go for one hour of noise-making, then file under S.27, then make more noise for 14 days, then make the most noise on the 28th - Badawi would wake up with a jolt and run away screaming hysterically.

Last month, BN component Sabah Progressive Party (Sapp) stunned the nation when it said it would back a no-confidence vote against Abdullah.

However, it has decided to hold back on its plan.

Hopefully until Monday?

Apparently so…. [breaking news - Malaysiakini (11Jul)

Sabah Progressive Party (Sapp) parliamentarians Eric Enchin Majimbun and Chua Soon Bui have pledged their vote for an opposition motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
_____________________________

Asked for his response, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz [who's also in charge of Parliamentary Affairs] brushed off the plan and described it as “rubbish.”

“There’s nothing in the Standing Orders to provide for such a thing,” he said when approached.

What about Standing Order 27, then? [See above]

Deputy Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ chairperson Bung Mokhtar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) said …

YOU AGAIN??? For not shutting the far cup after the lying disgrace you’ve been this week, we shall all now show you your trademark gesture.
Ok … one … two … THREE!

“The people already gave the mandate to BN. Why does the opposition want to table a motion of no-confidence against the government? What is the agenda? They want to topple the government?”

Duhh … I … I …  I think so, but …. er … muust be lah …

Meanwhile SINGAPORE cuts fuel prices [NST] – OF COURSE THEY WILL – “We simply must go one up on you again, stupid Malaysians! Nyeah, nyeah, nyeah, nyeah, nyeah…”

And Oz PM Rudd calls Malaysia a “thriving democracy” [compared to Myanmar, right?]
[Excerpts from the Star]

He said the recent general election was a “great testament to the political wisdom of the people of this country.

“I would like to congratulate you (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) and the people of Malaysia for the way in which you handled the democratic transformation in this country,” he said at a joint press conference with Abdullah.

Aha … it’s a diplomatic indirect free kick … a nice way of saying, “Yer peyple rilly  kicked yer brenarses, din’t thay maite?”

PROTES 2008 – oh whatta night!

Well it was not quite a million people – other than the organisers, no one ever expected that many anyway, so let’s just say it was one million give or take a few hundred thousand, but nevertheless, tonight 30,000 of us had a party.
Anwar was in his usual element blasting all and sundry in BN to kingdom come – he also confirmed that he will take on anyone – especially a Najib-Badawi tag team in July 15th’s “Great Petrol Debate” scheduled to be telecast live on TV – “Lawan tetap lawan,” said he.
He explaind why swearing on the Quran to prove his innocence was not allowed by Islamic Law – one has tho be CHARGED in court first – the Ulamaks say that using the Quran to disprove a mere allegation would be tantamont to belittling the Holy Book. Islamic Law as with Civil Law places the burden of proof on the accuser, he said.
Pity I missed Carburettor Dung Alak’s mooning incident – he’s a wild man of rawk!!
[See video of the incident below]
————————————————–
This morning when I set out there, I feared roadblocks … NONE.
I feared roads leading to the venue closed … NONE.
I feared the FRU and Army blocking our way into the stadium and chasing us away, creating a standoff, frustration, running street battles, tear gas and water cannons a’la HINDRAF … NONE.
Have the police [and the BN who hold their leash] FINALLY got it that public demos are not the problem - THEY ARE.
Perhaps it was the compromise of having it in an enclosed area instead of on the streets, perhaps it was because it was held in Selangor State Govt. territory, but whatever the reason was for this total non-kacau bilau by the cops, I am truly grateful for it.
To their discredit, their omnipresence, along with their Army cousins on the streets of PJ yesterday was a very frightening blow into the collective groins of the public – perhaps they were smug in the knowlege that their show of power yesterday was enough to deter most of us from coming out; and they were right – 970,000 stayed away, and Najib today, called the gig “a failure.”
But the 30,000 who did show up were enough to send the message to the BN that 30,000 men, women and children would ignore all the fear tactics in the world and show up to hear Anwar out.
Just let Najib try and get these many people to show up to listen to him!
Anyway, let’s let the pictures do the rest of the talking …
