malaysia shuts down for two days

It’s the first day of Chinese New Year and 90% [dare I say 99%] of businesses are closed. Almost all shops and restaurants are shut – my mom tried to go out and buy [definitely non-Chinese] rojak and cendol, but they were closed, too.

Every time CNY rolls around and I see the streets empty and shops closed, it brings me to a realisation that Malaysia would grind to a standstill if it were not for our brothers of Chinese descent.

It could be argued that where there is a demand, a supplier from another ethnic group would step up to the task, but will he/she be endowed with the same  business acumen, courage, perseverance and frugality? Not to mention moral support from members of his fraternity?

It is no insult to say, when it comes to business, the “Chinaman” is No.1 [followed close behind by the "Mamak" - and his rojak-cendol shop was also closed today].

Malaysia would be a failure as an economic entity without the Chinese, so this CNY, let us all acknowlege this and show our sincere gratitude to our fellow citizens of Chinese descent.

Let us all wish them a good rest these next two days and hope they enjoy themselves with plenty of XO, mahjong and non-halal food, but also beseech them to please return to business as usual soon!

We need you!! We love you!!  We can’t do without you!!

MR. CHINAMAN, YOU ROCK!!

This one’s for you:

man of the match (so far)

Forget about whatisnames and whatisname [the two KT candidates, la]. Forget about Anwar vs. Najib or PAS vs. UMNO or Pakatan vs. BN.

The most outstanding player at the moment, who’s tirelessly making his rounds around KT town urging the people to oust the BN-UMNO regime and doing a helluva good job of it is RAJA PETRA KAMARUDDIN (aka Pete).

Here’s one of his ceramahs [courtesy of Media Rakyat]

I will post more of his antics here if and when they become available.

He has also written an Open letter to KT voters on Malaysia Today. It’s really worth reading especially his saying, presumably on behalf of Anwar, the stand on PAS and its hudud/Islamic State agenda:

PAS is not in power. PAS can never be in power. PAS has only 23 seats in Parliament. …  PAS can never win more than 30 seats in Parliament.

You fear PAS because of what it MAY do if it comes to power — even though it can never come to power, not without DAP and PKR.

… and when Pakatan inevitably comes to power, there will be a tight check and balance mechanism to bury PAS’ Islamic State agenda,  in the form of Karpal Singh & Co.

I could write a lengthy report of my observations there, but apart from being a lazy ass, I think the campaign so far can be summed up like this:

BN is throwing shitloads of money at the people with their non-stop ’pembukaan rasmi’ this and ‘perasmian program’ that, and PAS are playing to the conservative sentiments by promising to ‘uphold Islam’ to eradicate all ’social ills’ [read: gambling, booze and sex], as if this is what the rest of us in Pakatan endorse.

I’m so sick of it.

May the best loser win.
