It’s the first day of Chinese New Year and 90% [dare I say 99%] of businesses are closed. Almost all shops and restaurants are shut – my mom tried to go out and buy [definitely non-Chinese] rojak and cendol, but they were closed, too.
Every time CNY rolls around and I see the streets empty and shops closed, it brings me to a realisation that Malaysia would grind to a standstill if it were not for our brothers of Chinese descent.
It could be argued that where there is a demand, a supplier from another ethnic group would step up to the task, but will he/she be endowed with the same business acumen, courage, perseverance and frugality? Not to mention moral support from members of his fraternity?
It is no insult to say, when it comes to business, the “Chinaman” is No.1 [followed close behind by the "Mamak" - and his rojak-cendol shop was also closed today].
Malaysia would be a failure as an economic entity without the Chinese, so this CNY, let us all acknowlege this and show our sincere gratitude to our fellow citizens of Chinese descent.
Let us all wish them a good rest these next two days and hope they enjoy themselves with plenty of XO, mahjong and non-halal food, but also beseech them to please return to business as usual soon!
We need you!! We love you!! We can’t do without you!!
MR. CHINAMAN, YOU ROCK!!
This one’s for you:
